Acupuncture and Chinese herbs used jointly with conventional drugs would significantly reduce the symptoms of hay fever, according to a clinical trial conducted in Germany.
Fifty-two people aged 20 to 58 in the grip with light to moderate hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) participated in this study. Randomly, researchers have formed two groups of 26 subjects. For six weeks, a group received acupuncture treatmentsAs a session per week and consumed decorations of Chinese herbs daily, while the other group received placebo treatment.
The treatment of Chinese medicine was half standardized:It consisted of a basic treatment common to all, to which were added some variants according to individuals, according to a diagnosis made in Chinese medicine. The placebo consisted of sessionsacupuncturewhere the needles were stung at the wrong points, and in decoctions of plants without therapeutic effect.
At the end of the study, 85 % of the subjects of the group treated by Chinese medicine noticed an improvement in their symptoms, against 40 % in the placebo group.Chinese medicine has also made it possible to improve the quality of life of participants more than placebo. During the study, subjects could continue to take their usual medication against hay fever.
The use of these drugs has decreased slightly in the group treated with Chinese medicine, but not significantly from a statistical point of view.
Researchers suspect that the therapeutic effect ofacupunctureand the pharmacopoeia would have been even greater if the study had lasted longer,And if Chinese medicine treatments had been entirely individualized, as is the case in a usual practice.
Hay colds generally manifest itself by sneezing, a flowing nose and stinging eyes. Symptoms appear during the flowering period of plants (lice grass, hay, birch, etc.) which begins in spring and ends in the fall.
