From birth to death, each human being carries cancer cells with which we constantly "negotiate". And sometimes cancer spreads. Is the history of cancer a fight against a monster (this disease), a quest (that of surviving) or a rebirth (as a survivor)?
In this story, there are several heroes: the patient, the relatives and the caregivers who help him. The context is that of 2019 where cancer has become the leading cause of mortality in Switzerland. Then news: currently the disease is in second position in the causes of morbidity just behind cardiovascular disease, with close to 25% of cases. In the future: it is estimated that there will be 40,000 people to live with cancer in Geneva in 2040: it is a lot for such a small town. The best news is that the number of survivors is increasingly large, thanks to technology and medicine. Cancer is trivialized and it is not a death sentence.
With More than one in five luck to get sick, and more than that happens to a loved one,It is not only a question of avoiding it but of preparing to face it, to improve the chances of survival, decrease the difficulty during the process, better help, and promote the quality of life after healing.
For the International Day for Cancer Awareness,Biomed MTC highlights and in juxtaposition the approaches of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. Better understanding the disease, the patients and the solutions is a great contribution to oneself and the others.
A decisive characteristic of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells which develop beyond their usual limits and which can then invade the rest of the body. Although some people have genetic predispositions to develop cancer from families with proven cases,It happens to anyone, anytime.
What are the most frequent cancers?
In Switzerland, the most common cancers for humans are prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, and bladder cancer.
The most common cancers for womenare breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, and uterian body cancer.
Those with the highest mortality rate are for humansLung cancer, prostate cancer, colonist, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer. For women, they are breast, lung, colon, pancreas and ovarian cancer cancers.
Statistics are only averages, and survivors of all types of cancer can testify. People with cancer find courage thanks to the sharing of other survivors. There are many podcasts like that of Martin, himself a survivor, who documents cases of victory against cancer: discover them by this link: "survival stories. "
The announcement of the diagnosis of cancer weighs heavy: it is an emotional shock and a considerable change of life. But why the disease is expressed in some brothers and others not; In some smokers and others not?
What causes cancer according to Western medicine?
Cancer results from the transformation of normal cells into tumor cells during a process in several stages which generally evolves from a precancerous lesion to a malignant tumor. These changes result from the interaction between thethe genetic factors of a person and three categories of external agents, of which :
- physical carcinogens, such as ultraviolet and ionizing radiation
- Chemical carcinogens, such as asbestos, components of tobacco smoke, alcohol Aflatoxin (a contaminant food) and arsenic (a contaminant of drinking water)
- Biological carcinogenic agents, such as infections caused by certain viruses, bacteria or parasites.
Who is most at risk of having cancer, according to Western medicine?
Some of the main risk factors are smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and lack of activity, but also air pollution. Some viruses such as hepatitis B and C as well as HPV infection (human papillom virus) can also cause liver and cervical cancer.
Preventive factors: according to Western medicine
- NO SMOKING
- Limited alcohol consumption

Chinese medicine point of view
For traditional Chinese medicine, cancer is a multiple facets pathological process that affects several body systems. For example, lung cancer does not only affect the lungs themselves, but it also affects the spleen and stomach via digestion. Tumors and growths are diagnosed as an accumulation of humidity, mucus, heat and toxicity and their proliferation (that is to say metastases) greatly affects the homeostasis of the body.
What causes cancer according to traditional Chinese medicine?
Depending on the basic theory of the MTC, diseases can come from three causes:
- External causesvia the six climatic factors: wind, cold, summer heat, humidity, drought and fire
- Internal causesVia seven affects or emotions: joy, concern, thought, sorrow, fear and dread.
- Neutral causes:Eat too much or too little, tax fatigue, blows and falls, crushing, drowning, animal injuries, insects and reptiles.
Who most at risk of having cancer according to Chinese medicine?
- Do not live according to the seasons and according to your own constitution, in the long term can weaken the organization's defense system and you will be more sensitive to the damage of internal organs.
- People who request their bodies byexcessive consumptionalcohol, tobacco, fatty and sweet foods and which do not exercise regularly are more prone to damp heat and toxins accumulation.
- A hot and humid internal climateCan disrupt normal physiology from the body and promote the proliferation of cancer cells.
How to prevent cancer using traditional Chinese medicine?
One of the most important fundamental pillars of Chinese medical culture- in the past as today - is theE Yangsheng 养生 or the art of nourishing life.Yangsheng first teaches us how to become better people by cultivating and nourishing our shenming 神明, our brilliant spirit. When our minds are quiet, the body will also benefit from this peace. In addition, Yangsheng teaches us how to maintain a healthy diet according to the four seasons(see this recipe link). Know how to adapt to changes in nature,It is to follow the current of nature and not go against. Going against the tide of nature, in Chinese medicine, is the beginning of the pathological process.
So how to live according to the four seasons?
In the spring, support your liver. Eat light foods with a slight sour flavor and drink peppermint and lemongrass tea.In summer, support your heart. Eat foods that are abundant in water to reconstruct the loss of body fluids due to perspiration. Drink green tea because it has a refreshing effect on the body.At the end of summer, support your spleen. Eat food not too fatty and avoid wetlands. Drink the rose tea with red jujubes (Chinese dates). In winter, support your kidneys. Eat hot and slightly salty foods. Look up early and protect the bottom of your back from the cold. Drink tea in ginseng.
Chinese medicine and Western medicine are not contradictory
Western medicine and Chinese medicine are not in conflict, and are often complementary,For example to relieve the side effects of treatments such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy. According to the League against Swiss Cancer, there are 400,000 cancer survivors in Switzerland in 2022. On the ESCA website (support for people with cancer in Geneva)Emotional support and physical well-being are highlighted. This suggests the importance of these aspects during the healing process, including psychology, advice, physical activity and relaxation services. These services are very important even after healing, when a new adventure begins:social and professional reintegration work.Chinese acupuncture and medicine advocate prevention, do not wait to have symptoms of discomfort before benefiting from the relaxation induced by acupuncture.

Case study #9 Acupuncture treats HPV (PG88)
Q: I followed your advice by prescribing Xiao Chai Hu Tang by adding Long Dan Cao withacupunctureTo treat a patient with breast cancer with vasomotor puffs, hot flashes and HPV infection after radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The treatment was very effective because the HPV test was negative. The most remarkable aspect of this case for me was the selection of acupuncture points for the treatment regime - Fengchi (VB20), Shen Men (C7), Shao Fu (C8) and San Yin Jiao (R6) - Acupuncture once a week. After only four treatments (4 weeks), the state has improved by more than 70 %. I intend to present these results at a TCM conference in the United States. A: Congratulations on the success of your treatment against HPV. I wish the best of success to your presentation!
