Method
In traditional Chinese medicine, the approach is based on the four diagnoses (四診 sì zhĕn): feel, observe, listen, question.
Observation
Examination of the complexion, superficial vascularisation, appearance of the eyes and tongue, hair, gestures and gait.
Listening
Listening to the tone of voice, the way of speaking, the main points of complaint of the patients, as well as the smell of the skin, or the body give information on the imbalances of the organism.
Dialogue
A dialogue with the patient completes the examination with useful information about his or her illness, feelings, medical history and life experiences.
Evaluation
A detailed and subtle pulse taking helps to assess the state of the energy (氣 Qì) and whether its circulation is good. This can be supplemented by palpation of the abdomen and other parts of the body.
